The Apprentice National Minimum Wage

From 1st April the Apprentice National Minimum Wage will be increased to £5.28 for those aged up to 19 or those in their first year of an apprenticeship. 

Apprentices will receive the apprentice rate if they’re either:

  • aged under 19
  • or aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship

an example scenario for this is

An apprentice aged 22 in the first year of their apprenticeship will be entitled to the new minimum hourly rate of £5.28.

Apprentices are entitled to the minimum wage for their age if they both:

  • aged 19 or over
  • and completed the first year of their apprenticeship

an example scenario for this is

An apprentice aged 22 who has completed the first year of their apprenticeship will be entitled to the new minimum hourly rate of £10.18.

  • Apprentices and those aged under 18 will receive £5.28
  • Those aged 18 to 20 will receive £7.49
  • Those aged 21 to 22 will receive £10.18
  • Those aged 23 or older will receive £10.42

What You Need To Do

Ensure your staff are all receiving the minimum wage and keep adequate records of all payments so you can show you have complied with national minimum wage rules.
