Salon Owners! All You Need To Know To Take On An Apprentice
It's SO easy to take on an apprentice! Here's all of the essentials you need to know:
1. You must be a registered employer with a PAYE number
To employ an apprentice, you must be set up as an employer and registered with HMRC with an active PAYE number. This is essential for funding eligibility and payroll for your apprentice.
2. You must provide a minimum of 30 hours of paid employment to your apprentice per week
Apprenticeships are real jobs with real responsibilities. You’ll need to offer a contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week to ensure your apprentice can meet the programme requirements.
3. You may be eligible for a £1,000 government incentive*
If you take on an apprentice aged 16-18, you could receive a £1,000 incentive payment. A win-win for growing your business and supporting young people into the industry. Our dedicated recruitment team are here to guide you every step of the way. *Terms and conditions apply.
4. Apprentices must be paid at least £7.55 per hour
This is the current National Minimum Wage for apprentices aged under 19 or in the first year of their apprenticeship. You’ll need to meet this legal requirement from day one of employment.

5. Training is delivered on and off-the-job
Apprenticeship training is delivered both on and off-the-job. At Kleek, the apprentice benefits from a mix of on-the-job training in your salon and off-the-job learning at one of our UK academies. This blended approach ensures they gain practical, hands-on experience while developing technical skills and theory.
