Why Vanilla Tramp Salon in Manchester Invests in Apprentices

  • 12 July 2026

Recruiting and developing talented hairstylists is a challenge many salon owners across Manchester face. For Lilly, salon owner of Vanilla Tramp in Manchester, apprentices have become an essential part of her business, helping the salon run smoothly while developing into confident professionals.

Having worked with Kleek Apprenticeships for over a year, Lilly shares why choosing the right training provider matters, how apprentices have supported her salon, and why she'd encourage other Manchester salon owners to invest in the next generation of hair professionals.

How long have you worked with Kleek, and how have we supported you throughout?

We've been working with Kleek for just over a year now, and I couldn't be happier. I've used several training providers over the years, and Kleek are by far the best.

I was blown away when Kleek sent our hairdressing apprentice a full kit at the start of her course, including everything she needed to start her hairdressing journey, saving her hundreds of pounds! Our apprentice experienced some personal issues and her Educator raised concerns with her peers, who then kindly arranged counselling to help her. This was beyond kind and generous. That level of support really sets Kleek apart from other hair and beauty training providers.

How have your apprentices helped your salon grow and adapt?

Honestly, we couldn't do what we do without our apprentices. Our salon would simply not run. They keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes, allowing our stylists to focus on delivering a great experience for clients. From keeping the salon clean and organised to shampooing, toning, making drinks, answering the phone, processing payments, restocking products and looking after clients between services, they're involved in every part of the salon. Their contribution is invaluable.

What advice would you give to other salon owners thinking about taking on an apprentice?

My advice? Do it now.

I know taking on an apprentice can seem intimidating because of the time and investment involved, but the benefits far outweigh the challenges. Apprentices help elevate your business by freeing you up to focus on your clients and running the salon.

There’s also something very heartwarming about watching new stylists grow, knowing you have taught them everything they need to know. In the end, you’ll have homegrown stylists who know your salon inside and out, and go on to provide hairdressing services to the same standard your clients are used to. They add so much to the overall salon experience for the client, too.

Can you tell us about any standout moments from your apprentices so far?

For me, the biggest highlight is seeing the transformation. Watching someone go from not knowing how to hold a brush to becoming a confident, happy stylist with a fully booked column is amazing.

Seeing that journey and knowing you've helped them build the skills and confidence to succeed is one of the most rewarding parts of being an employer.

Helping Manchester salons grow their own talent

Lilly's experience shows how apprentices can make a real difference to a busy salon, supporting the team from day one while developing into skilled, confident stylists for the future.
