Shaping your salon's future success with Apprenticeships

At JM Hairdressing, investing in apprentices has proven to be an effective, long-term strategy for building a strong salon team.

We spoke with Salon Manager Laura to discover how apprentices have played a key role in shaping her salon’s ongoing success.

What motivated you to invest in apprenticeships in your salon?

''Investing in apprenticeships is the future and long-term growth of our salon. The success and sustainability of our business depend on the next generation of hairdressers, and if we don’t actively train and support young people entering the industry, we risk losing the skills and creativity that keep our salon growing. It’s great to be able to support young learners by giving them an opportunity to have a successful career.''

What do you believe have been the key benefits of employing an apprentice in your business?

''It keeps our team evolving, and our clients love to see our commitment to training and investing in younger learners. Apprentices help our stylists throughout the day, allowing them to manage their time more effectively. This enables us to book more clients, which has a positive impact on the business.''

What challenges do you face as a salon owner when it comes to training apprentices?

''One of the main challenges we face is setting aside dedicated time each week for apprentice training. This requires careful planning and organisation, and can be difficult to manage consistently. Coordinating training models and supervising practical sessions also takes significant time and attention, as high-quality training needs close support and oversight.''

What advice would you give to other salon owners hesitant to take on apprentices?

''Apprentices are a valuable asset to a business because they represent the future generation of your company. A business that invests in apprentices is securing its own future success, and with the right training and support, apprentices grow in confidence, skill and professionalism. Over time, they often become some of your busiest and most loyal stylists, contributing significantly to the team and helping the business thrive for years to come.''

Can you share any specific examples of how your apprentices have brought fresh perspectives or innovation to your salon? Or a memorable success story?

''Six of our apprentices are still with us. Our manager, who was an apprentice 20 years ago, has worked as a stylist and has now become the salon manager. She has also recently made it through to the finals at the 2026 British Hairdressing Business Awards.''
