At Natasha Hodges Hair, apprentices play a key role in the team, supporting in day-to-day activities and contributing to both the client experience and salon growth.
We spoke with salon manager, Natasha, as she shares how apprentices have improved time management across her salon and have had a positive financial impact on the business.
What motivated you to invest in apprenticeships in your salon?
Our apprentices are at the heart of everything we do, and quite simply, we wouldn’t be able to operate without them. They play a vital role in supporting both our team and our clients, allowing us to deliver the high level of service and experience that every client deserves.
What do you believe have been the key benefits of employing an apprentice in your business?
One of the key benefits of having an apprentice is improved time management across the salon. With their support on tasks such as removing colour, toning, and assisting with smaller services, stylists can focus on other clients. This allows us to increase our capacity, see more clients, and ultimately grow the business in a financially beneficial way.
What challenges do you face as a salon owner when it comes to training apprentices?
I don’t find many challenges when working with apprentices. The only real consideration for me is to ensure that I invest my time and energy into someone who is truly committed to a career in hairdressing. It’s a demanding role - you’re on your feet all day, and it requires dedication and resilience - so it’s important that an apprentice is passionate and serious about their future, rather than seeing it as a short-term option.
What advice would you give to other salon owners hesitant to take on apprentices?
It’s important to ensure that having an apprentice remains financially viable for the business. While apprentice wages have increased and they may not initially generate the same income as a stylist, there are still many ways to make it work. By carrying out smaller services efficiently and supporting the team, apprentices contribute to overall productivity and help maintain a profitable, well-balanced salon.
Can you share any specific examples of how your apprentices have brought fresh perspectives or innovation to your salon? Or a memorable success story?
Over the years, I’ve trained many apprentices who have gone on to become amazing stylists, with several still part of my team today, building strong columns and loyal client bases. It’s incredibly rewarding to see young individuals join us straight from school, often nervous and lacking confidence, and grow into skilled, confident professionals who handle every situation with passion, care, and maturity.
